LNKALL

SPECTACOLOR
Times Square Light Signboard 1978

After completing the HOUSE 11A animation, I realized that the future of handmade computer graphics was limited. The IAUS was located on 41st Street and I'd often meet a friend working at the NY Times just on the other side of Times Square. Pointing up to the giant animated light bulb display, SPECTACOLOR, I remarked offhand, “I ought to be working there!” Soon thereafter, I had a job sitting behind the sign at One Times Square animating lightbulbs to advertise films, concerts and sporting events. The board was popular for personals, for a small fee one could propose marriage, or celebrate holidays with a surprise on the sign at the appointed time. We were encouraged to make interstitials, small animations that fit between the ads. I displayed welcome greetings, marriage proposals and my own message to New Yorkers, TOUCH HERE -->

One evening I pointed the digitizing camera away from the light stand and did a quick twirl:

SPECTACOLOR was my introduction to computers. The name of this site, LNKALL, is a nod to TECO, an ancient text editor requiring six character descriptors. LNKALL was a constriction of the LINK LIST, the master list of all of the ads running on the sign at any given time. The word became a mantra, my code for the the future from my vantage point at the crossroads of the world in 1978: LNKALL
